John Moriarty Football

John Moriarty is a football legend, a role model and a mentor for Indigenous Australians.

A former Adelaide Juventus (Adelaide United) and South Australian striker, John was the first Indigenous football (soccer) player to be selected for Australia. Taken from his mother in Borroloola, NT, as a four year old under Stolen Generation policies, John finished school, played football and became South Australia’s first Indigenous University graduate. Education and football paved the way for Moriarty to pursue a stand out career in sport, government service and business.

John Moriarty is Patron of Football Federation Australia’s Indigenous Football Development Program, helping steer the national Football body along a pathway of nurturing Indigenous football talent.

John is concurrently using football as a key to encourage education and career aspirations amongst Indigenous children through John Moriarty Football: a non-profit program creating and delivering world best practice development for young Indigenous football players. It equips and intensively mentors local coaches with long term support and expertise, building school attendance, employment and a more secure future for remote communities.

John Moriarty Football focuses on under 6, 8 and 10 year old boys and girls. These are the children where gains need to be made in education, healthier lifestyles and participation in sport, so they can aspire to a brighter future. At this young age, structured, disciplined participation in football is a tool to change life outcomes.

With the majority of young remote and regional Indigenous children living in severely disadvantaged situations, the potential for sustainable change is considerable. Football will create a social infrastructure to support engaged communities to develop healthier lifestyles, achieve higher school retention and secure increased employment.

The “no school, no play” message is: “like John Moriarty, stay in school, take the pathway to a career, and become a leader.”
